Before you get started with the dog training, you have to first set your expectations. Training takes quite a bit of time, effort and patience, but it can be very rewarding. You should always keep in mind that you are trying to teach your dog something that is completely unnatural for them, even though they're capable of doing the task you want them to do. They don't understand your language, or what you're trying to get them to do. It would be the same as you trying to get a college degree in a language you've never learned.

If at all possible, you should try to use hand signals when training your dog new commands. You should accompany this with your verbal signal, to get the puppy accustomed to the verbal signal as well. Hand signals are much easier for a dog to learn, and are easier to demonstrate the required action. It also helps because most commands require that you get the dog to perform the action using a treat, and the dog will naturally be paying attention to your hand.
